The Real Men, Real Heroes Project is sponsored by the The Wichita Community Foundation, K.T Wiedemann
Foundation, Cox Media, Spirit AeroSystems, Wichita State University, Butler County Community College,
Wichita Public Schools and the Wichita TOP Children's Fund. For information,
email the Project.
Why are my students receiving Real Men, Real Hero trading cards?
All 3rd through 8th grade boys in USD 259 are receiving packs of these
cards. The trading cards are a key part of a larger community project to
expand the aspirations of African American boys by acquainting them with
real men from our community who represent positive role models.

Who are the men featured on these cards?
The Heroes were nominated by the public for their demonstrated
commitment to family, work and community. They include men from a
variety of professions. All of them graduated from high school and most
completed college. Though the Heroes are all African American, we
believe they serve as good role models for all boys regardless of race.

How can I use these cards in the classroom?
Teachers are encouraged to use the cards as writing and discussion
prompts regarding such subjects as role models, heroes and students
own ideas about what it takes to become a role model.
Detailed curriculum
suggestions are available here.

Will the Heroes be available to visit my classroom?
Yes! Heroes will visit the schools throughout the year at the invitation of
individual teachers and schools. To arrange a visit, contact Assistant
Superintendent Denise Wren at
dwren@usd259.net

What can the Heroes do during a classroom visit?
You may choose to have the heroes read to your students and then
discuss the reading, following
the model provided by Chicago's Real Men,
Read Program.

Or, you may wish for your students to learn about the Hero that will be
visiting, then interview him. Background files on several heroes are
available at the
Meet A Hero section of this site.

Can my students contact the Heroes with questions via email?
Yes! This site will soon make it possible for students to email the Heroes
through a monitored e-mentoring program. Until that is operational, you
may send questions to a Hero through the
Project Manager. Put "Hero
questions" in the subject line.
